HOMEPAGE SALENTO

COASTAL GROTTOS

The karstic rock phenomenon is typical to Salento and this favours the growth of rocky escarpments that evolved over time. The peninsula, is in fact, dotted with thousands of grottos which testify to the vital importance of the reconstruction of the history and details of ancient eons past, not only for Salento, but for the whole Mediterranean itself. On the Adriatic coast you find the Grotto della Poesie at Roca Vecchia. This is a natural paradise, which holds several important archaeological finds. Further south, beyond Otranto, adjoining Porto Badisco we find a stopping point at Enea and find the Grotto dei Cervi, a Neolithic grotto, and one, which contains some of the most important, cave paintings in all Europe, over 3000. Following the spectacular coastline you reach Castro where two further grottos are to be found; the Romanelli, with its Palaeolithic graffiti and symbols rife with sexual innuendos and is one of the most important finds of this age; secondly, the Zinzulusa, with its vivid spectacles of light and colour, formed by the reflections and refractions of sun playing on the stalagmites and stalactites contained within. At the cape of Leuca are several well-preserved grottos; the Tre Porte, which housed human remains and African fauna from the Neanderthal era; the dell’Elefante and dei Giganti with their pachyderm remains; and the del diavolo which contained fragments of utensils and crockery dating back also to the Neanderthal age. The Ionian coast also houses several important grottos for both archaeologist and ethnologists, the most famous being the grottos of di Uluzzo and del Cavallo, found near Porto Selvaggio, where interesting Palaeolithic remains along with the bones of great mammoths have been found. These, mostly accessible, grottos ensure that for its visitors and inhabitants Salento is one of the most interesting places to live and breathe the history of the Mediterranean.
